Just as much as the bride, the dress and the ring, the cake topper also has quite the shining appearance at any wedding. Moving on from the traditional ‘bride & groom’ figurines, most couples are opting for a more simplistic cake base with an elegant topper to complete with a ‘cherry on top’.
Here are some inspiring DIY ideas to keep your cake looking stylish & sophisticated!
1. Glitter Lettering
Wooden words like ‘love’, ‘dream’ etc can be found at any good craft store and in all shapes and sizes. You can also find individual lettering if you prefer. Paint the colour of your choice and sprinkle with glitter for that added sparkle on top.
2. Wired Words
Grab yourself a wire coat hanger and pliers and simply twist the word you like into shape. Probably best to sketch out the word first for a guide and add some super glue to the ends that may stick out. Paint over with gold or silver paint and voila! So effective & stylish!
3. Love Flags
Can be easily teamed with the theme colours of the wedding and can have as little or as many as you like. Grab some wooden skewer sticks and coloured paper and cut the designs you desire, ensure a little tab is placed on the edge of the shape to curl around the stick, ready to stick in the top of the cake. You can even buy premade ones from Betawife on ETSY!
4. Ceramic Cute Animals
Lovebirds, rabbits, chickens and all sorts of cutesy animals or ornaments make a gorgeous topper. Home/gift ware stores and even cheap shops stock some cute little ceramic pieces. Pictured here are my favorites…bunnies! How cute!
Lastly, flowers never go astray to complete an elegant affair. Sometimes cake makers can charge quite a price to make an edible one so maybe opt for a beautiful, large, fake flower to place on top. Again, craft stores can cater for some quite real-looking blooms to use. Alternatively, you can always ask your florist for real flowers which would be arranged on the day to remain fresh.
