Organising a wedding and want to have a vegan cake that is FABULOUS?

Cake is a very important part of my life. I think snob is a harsh word in this instance, however quite true. My standards for cake are high, and thus, my search for the ultimate wedding cake took a few cake taste sessions!

$$$ = Higher end cost, $$ = Mid range, $ = Low cost

 1. Blissful Cakes

Victoria Phone: 0408 274 808  Email: [email protected] We met the owner of Blissful Cakes at her house, her name is Ann Marie. You know when you go to someones house you just know what sort of person they are? Well all I can say is, Ann Marie is bloody awesome. We sat down, and she gave us a slice of her FIRST vegan cake. She made a chocolate and raspberry liqueur cake with a Lindt chocolate and coconut cream ganache. Words cannot describe how AMAZING this cake was – it was without a doubt the best cake I have ever tasted. I am the type of person that will have a slice of cake and then be done, but with this, after I had one slice, I have to request we take the rest home. Driving back, the whole way I was staring at the bag, forcing myself to not finish the rest. This woman is professional, knows what she is doing and will make you a sensational cake personalised to you.

2. Ab Fab Cakes

Victoria Phone: 1300 422 322  Address: 2/400 High Street, Kew, Victoria 3101 Email:  [email protected]   Ab Fab are your commercial multi award winning cake company. It’s their bread and butter, they know cakes inside and out. The great thing about Ab Fab, is you can go into their showroom and see amazing cakes on display to get a better idea of what you want. You get a free taste testing of a number of vegan options. In the vegan range they offer: Choc Mud, Choc Jaffa, Choc Raspberry & Choc Mint. All cakes come with a ganache. What put me off, however, was when I was trying the vegan option, the woman said to me ‘would you like to try the ‘normal’ one too’? That made me cringe! Normal? I’m sorry lady, there aint nothing normal about cruelty! I just didn’t appreciate the comment nor felt it was appropriate to a vegan client. I also found they were quite clinical in their approach, I guess because they are so large and must see many bride to be’s a day. It was nowhere near as personal and warm as Blissful Cakes. The lady also informed me that they made the ganache with water and cocoa. This sounded really strange to me, as a ganache should be creamy and amazing. Why could they not use dairy free cream, margarine or coconut cream? But, criticism aside, their cakes were very impressive and you can be rest assured you are getting a quality product.

4. Celebrations by Cakes Plus

New South Wales Phone: (02) 94391171 Mail: 8 Panorama Road, Lane Cove NSW 2066 Email: [email protected]   I have personally not tried a cake by Celebrations, however I have it on good authority that these guys are a great choice for a special occasion like a wedding or birthday. Their cakes look great, taste great and the staff are very friendly. When I was originally looking at having my wedding at Coffs Harbour in NSW, I called these guys and they were very helpful in offering solutions for transporting the cake to the venue. They don’t have the widest selection of vegan flavours, just chocolate and vanilla, however they do provide options with fillings like chocolate frosting, vanilla butter cream or coconut cream. If you are in NSW, definitely consider these guys.

5. A Caterpillar’s Dream

Victoria Phone: (03) 99396133  Mail: Shop 4 / 26 Princess St, Kew 3101, Victoria, Australia Email: [email protected]   A Caterpillars Dream are actually doing the catering for my wedding! However, their cakes are really delicious, too! They have 4 vegan flavours available: Chocolate mud [which is VERY muddy and chocolatey…it is the bomb!], Lemon [A little too lemony for me] and Carrot Cake [Too sweet and not suitable for wedding]. For a wedding, I would very much recommend the Chocolate Mud. Their presentation is sensational [If you want a tiered cake with lots of rolled chocolate all over it looking awesome, this is it] however they don’t seem to use fondant or do specific styles for presentation – so that is a limitation. What they lack in flexibility for design, they make up for in cost – a wedding cake will cost you $300-$350 which is pretty sensational!
